History of Landscove
This section is a Work in Progress - a collection of pictures, photographs, maps and postcards that I have collected over a while with some commentary where it might be of interest.
The information may not be historically correct so apologies for that if I am wrong! I've tried to put the items in some sort of chronological order and include some "Then & Now" pictures for comparison.
In the mid-1930s, use of the southern field was confined to mobile homes and tents. The house in the photo would later be replaced by the holiday complex - reception, restaurant and entertainment area.
By the 1960s, the northern site was called Louville Holiday Camp. Here's the entrance with the original shop at the site of the present day house/launderette. I remember that weighing machine but seem to recall it was rather expensive at the time, probably 6d!
This particular photo is taken looking east out towards Berry Head. The properties near the top left is where Rockrose Cottage is now situated.
Here you can see that the site orignally provided very simple holiday "chalets" - more like garden sheds - and pitches for tents and caravans.
Right: Similar accommodation at the St Mary's Bay site. Note 2 doors; these were semi-detached!
In the 1970s the wider site was upgraded: the portable accomodation was replaced by perminent chalets. Towards the end of the 70s, the brick-built cottages, which includes Rockrose, were built.
